It would help if you would tell us what role you want to play. A mesmer is very different than a monk, for example. What would you rather be? Damage, anti-caster, anti-melee, healing, support, or something else?

In my opinion there is no best and worst. Every build has its advantages in a given situation. Just need someone with half a brain playing that build.

Go start one. Everyone wants a monk but no one wants to play one. I got tired of not having enough Mesmers so I started a Mesmer.

I play a shutdown mesmer, but if you want to play a monk, play one. Healing preferrably, though protection are ok.

Good luck

This is like walking into a bar and asking the bartender what you should do with your life. Be a doctor or a lawyer, there is good money there...

To the point, if you haven't spent some time on a pure monk start now; you can always drop it. Play a mesmer(or ranger) and focus simply on shutting down your opponent. Try an elementalist (air) or a hammer/earth knockdown ranger if you really want to do damage. Don't try to be creative, but look at what your opponents are running and go with that. Also look at what people are complaining about (w/mo and rangers in Pugs) and avoid them since groups are having issues with them at the moment.

If things aren't going well, don't try to reinvent the wheel. Use some of the posted builds that work and watch what people are doing and react.

Trying to make a square wheel that works as well as a round one is half the fun. Make your own builds, usually skill synergy is very obvious if you're looking for it.

And who has issues with rangers in PUGs? Even the new ones seem to be able to pick up the class quickly.

Yes, there is a growing number of secondary mesmers.

I started a Blood/Curses Necro with secondary Mesmer.
I concentrated on backfiring at warriors who aim for soft targets. -> Deadly towards high hitting warriors.

Well, we all know there is no 'best', but the ones I would call best are;

Primary - Monk, because (almost) every team needs at least one.
Secondary - Mesmer, because it's the best class for focusing and enhancing the abilities of any pure-style primary.

Of course, this doesn't mean that Mo/Me is the 'best' class

Guy probably means empathy... As pvp goes, pvp premade builds suck monkey. If you're planning on using one, find a better build -then you may have more success. Tons of builds in this board, my favorite so far would be the cookie cutter air ele build. Providing you manage your energy, you can kill a monk in 8 seconds with warrior help.

there is absolutely no best and worst. Every character has a counter, and every build is beatable. That is the great thing about this game. As for some of the suggestions above... R/Me : (. W/Me : ( - not great mixes. Mesmer is a great profession because of its diversity. I dont like it with ranger at all, and not as a secondary for warrior. Illusionary weaponry characters are great, but you would go mesmer primary, not secondary. Basically you will never find just 1 character that dominates (thankfully). It is all about the build and trends. Bet you were one of those guys who had a warrior monk 2 months ago, and an air ele last month. Now you're working on a ranger. Most people follow the trends in this manner. If you wanna spend some good quality time in the HoH, set the trend, dont follow. The good ole Hammer/Earth warrior is always a great pick however. Those guys can do some good solid damage along with various interupts. If you just like being asked to join any old team then be a monk. Everybody needs a monk. But basically, there is no real best or worst. It all depends on what you need in a build.

Yeah secondary mesmer ruins the point of illusionary weaponry -damage.

Can you name a single reason why it would be better to go mes/r intsead of r/mes for an illusionary weapons build? What could possibly outweigh the awesome ranger armor and access to expertise stances? (fast casting is pointless for IW)
